Frequently Asked Questions
Got a question about remedial massage? Check out the most common questions we get asked and if you don’t find the answer you’re looking for, please do give us a call — we’re happy to help.
I’m a bit nervous about taking off my clothes, what can I wear during my massage? That’s understandable and lots of people feel uncomfortable before their first massage. However, we do everything we can to make sure your massage is a relaxing and enjoyable experience. Different types of massage require different levels of undress, but you’ll always be given privacy to change and draped securely for modesty. The only area uncovered will be the area the therapist is working on. AlViva clinics are warm and welcoming and you can even choose your own music (or no music at all if that’s your preference).
How far in advance should I book an appointment? Specific times, such as evenings and the lunch hour, are very popular and we recommend that you book a week or more in advance for these. However, if you’re more flexible with your appointment time, then 1 or 2 days in advance is generally OK. We do occasionally have same-day appointments available.
How long does a massage take? For your first appointment it’s a good idea to book a full hour. This enables time for a thorough assessment and the development of a personalised treatment programme. The length of any follow-up appointments will depend on your needs but will usually be between 30–60 minutes.
Can I have a massage if I’m injured? Fresh sprains, bruises, inflamed areas, and open wounds cannot be massaged. If in doubt, please call Alison on 021 031 8068 to discuss before you make your appointment.
I’m pregnant, can I still have a massage? There are a few weeks in early pregnancy (weeks 10–14) when massage is not recommended. Generally though, providing you are well, massage can bring a great deal of relief from common pregnancy ailments such as backache, headaches and leg cramps. It can also ease any anxiety, help you sleep better and even relax your baby! It’s important that you do go to a qualified professional massage therapist such as Alison, who knows all the ‘dos and don’ts’ about massage during pregnancy. If in any doubt, check with your lead maternity caregiver first.
Can I exercise after a massage? It’s generally best to allow a 24 hour recovery time after a massage to allow your body time to adapt to the changes (especially if you have had deep work). There may be an increased risk of injury if you do strenuous exercise immediately after a massage.
How does pre-event Sports Massage work? Pre-event massage techniques warm up your muscles in preparation for action and this reduces the likelihood of injury.
How often should I have a massage? This depends on the purpose of your massage. For example,
- If you have a specific problem, such as limited movement in an area, you may need a weekly massage for a period of 4–5 weeks until the movement returns.
- If you rely on massage to ease out tension caused by your work, a monthly or fortnightly massage may work for you.
- If you’re training for an event, the timing, frequency, length of massage will depend on your training programme or coaching requirements.
We’re always happy to discuss your needs and develop a programme that works best for you.
What kind of oils do you use? At AlViva we use high quality massage waxes and oils selected to be kind to your skin. Natural wax has no fragrance, while pre-blended waxes contain essential oils for particular therapeutic uses such as relaxation or sports work. If your skin is sensitive, please let us know so we can select the most suitable oil or wax for you.
I’ve heard that massage can hurt, is this correct? We offer many different types of massage at AlViva — and none of them will cause you unbearable pain! A traditional Swedish massage for example uses light to medium pressure and should leave you feeling relaxed, with an overall sense of well-being. Deep tissue massage, ideal for easing areas of specific pain, may be uncomfortable but should never be unbearably painful. During treatment we’ll always check regularly with you to make sure you’re still feeling comfortable — and don’t be afraid to speak up if you’re not.
